Biography
Dr. Naeha Sharif is a Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science & Software Engineering, UWA, specializing in Computer Vision (CV) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). She completed her PhD in 2021, focusing on a contemporary problem of Artificial Intelligence (AI)- Natural Language description of images. During her doctoral research, Dr. Sharif developed state-of-the-art captioning metrics and models. Her work emphasized the crucial role of linguistic knowledge in enhancing machines' visual understanding. In recognition of her exceptional achievements, she was honoured with the prestigious "ACS 1962 Medal" for the most outstanding PhD in Western Australia in the field of Information Technology and Computer Science. Dr. Sharif's research is published in renowned venues such as the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV), the International Journal of Computer Vision (IJCV), the Association of Computational Linguistics (ACL), and the Winter Conference on Applications of Computer Vision (WACV).
Driven by a passion for applying her expertise to real-world challenges, Dr. Sharif's current focus lies in automating preliminary medical assessments. Her research aims to identify high-risk patients in a timely manner, enabling more effective and proactive preventive measures. One of her recent projects involves quantifying Abdominal Aortic Calcification (AAC) in elderly individuals using spine scans obtained through Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). Furthermore, she is actively involved in developing AI models that can automatically assess and generated medical reports for Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) Images.
Dr. Sharif welcomes aspiring PhD students with a strong track record and research publications to reach out to her for scholarship opportunities.
