Personal profile

Biography

Melinda is a pharmacist who joined UWA in 2010 to follow her passion for improving the breastfeeding experience for mothers and infants. She initially worked with the Hartmann Human Lactation Research Group and then moved to the School of Allied Health where she founded and is chief investigator for the LactaResearch group. Melinda’s research is aimed at supporting effective lactation through the translation of research to practice.

Her research achievements include LactaPedia, an internationally collaborative glossary of lactation terminology for science and medicine and LactaMap, an online lactation care support system. Translation of research to practice has been widely quoted to take 17 years, LactaMap and LactaPedia bridge this gap and allow new research to be delivered directly to practice soon after publication. These internationally available platforms assist evidence-based lactation knowledge to be easily embedded into medical practice and education curricula.

Melinda was recognised for her work in early nutrition by the Pharmaceutical Association of Australia as Western Australia’s Pharmacist of the Year in 2019.

Research

Key research areas cover two projects:

The conceptualisation and development of an online lactation care support system (LactaMap) to assist with the medical care of mothers and infants experiencing difficulty with lactation.
