Biography

Melanie holds a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, majoring in Humanities in Health and Medicine/Women’s Health, graduating from this degree with Honours. Her academic and research journey is driven by a strong commitment to improving paediatric health outcomes in Australia, with a particular focus on infectious diseases and the prevention of sudden unexpected deaths in infants and children.

Her Honours research investigated the physiological mechanisms underlying the prone sleep position and its association with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), forming the foundation for her continuing interest in this critical area with her PhD focused on the immunological and microbial origins of SIDS and Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC).

As a consumer-led researcher, Melanie is passionate about embedding lived experience into research. She believes that genuine consumer involvement is essential for ensuring that SIDS/SUDC research is relevant, impactful, and sustainable into the future.

In addition to her academic work, Melanie is a national ambassador for Red Nose Australia, where she contributes to advocacy, education, and awareness efforts. Her research and advocacy are united by a strong sense of purpose and an unwavering drive to improve health outcomes for Australian children and their families.
