Biography

Matthew Tonts is Professor of Geography and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Education.  He joined UWA in 2001, and was formerly the Head of the School of Earth and Environment (2010-2016) and Director of the Institute for Regional Development (2005-2010).

Matthew's research and education interests are broad, spanning environmental geography, regional development, rural communities and spatial planning. He has over 150 scholarly publications in these areas, and supervised more than 40 PhD students to completion. His has undertaken work with a diverse range of Commonwealth and State government organisations, local governments and not-for-profit organisations on matters related to regional development, environmental management, urban systems and spatial planning. He has also led UWA's research partnership with the Committee for Perth since 2008. In 2020, Matthew was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.
