Biography

Mary's expertise lies in the field of Histology. Throughout her extensive career at UWA she has gained knowledge and technical skills within research & teaching.

Mary manages the histology research facility, CELLCentral, within the Cell Biology & Imaging Research Infrastructure Platform (RIP).

The operational function of this core facility is under Mary's supervision and strong leadership. In this role, Mary provides training to staff & students alike in the various histological techniques available at CELLCentral. This training also extends to the wider community outside of UWA.

Mary provides excellent consultation for histological projects to determine the best possible outcome for the researchers. You will have the option to be trained on the relevant equipment/techniques or leave it to the expert!

As manager, Mary also has the responsibilty to ensure a safe working environment for all users of the facility. This requires compliance strategies to negate accidents and potential injuries. 

Engaging with industry is a way that Mary keeps informed of the latest technology to the market and new processes to enhance the facility.

Mary established the Histology Group of WA (HGWA) in 2018 and is the current Chairperson of the group with 300+ members.

This group provides educational extension to its members and also an opportunity for networking within the histotechnology workplace. This includes clinical & research spaces. 

On a national level, Mary is the current Chairperson of Australasian Association of Histology & Histotechnology (AAHH). This group was formally established in 2019. It works towards being an advocate for issues arising in the histology industry and also organising national level conferences. A large collection of histotechnologists meet every second year for professional development which includes technical workshops and presentations by leading specialists.
