Personal profile

Biography

I am a Professor and Western Australian Fellow at the Centre for Exploration Targeting at The University of Western Australia.

I studied up to MSc level in the UK, then moved to the USA to do a PhD, went to Melbourne to do a Postdoc and take up a teaching and research position at Monash University before moving to Toulouse, France where I had a position withe the Institute de Recherche pour le Developpement, and most recently came to Perth in 2013.

My scientific interests revolve around microstructure studies (the Elle platform), integration of geology and geophysics in 3D (the Loop/MinEx CRC project), and the tectonics and metallogenesis of the West African and Guyanese Cratons (WAXI & SAXI). My recently completed Western Australian Fellowship was focused on improving the links between geological and geophysical data analysis in 3D via analysis of the geological and topological uncertainty.

Roles and responsibilities

Research

Industrial relevance

The WAXI and SAXI projects are primarilly funded by AMIRA Global industry consortiums, and you can hear us discuss this project on the Exploration Radio podcast. The MinEx CRC is a partnership between industry and the Australian Government. The DARE ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre brings together a diverse range of industry partners to work on analysing risk in a natural science context. I am also involved in a now-cpmpleted MRIWA industry/state government collaboration on the Paterson Orogen, and a follow-up project related to numerical and analogue modelling of Basins which received ARC and MRIWA funding, with further industry support.

Teaching overview

I am involved in teaching microstructures and thegeological interpretation of geophsyical datasets.

Engagement

I regularly teach a course to professionals on the geological interpretation of regional geophysical datasets.

In 2020 along with Nicolas Thebaud and Corinne Debat, we established Agate Project Ltd a not-for-profit company that offers a range of education opportunities for professionals, researchers and students based in Africa in the field of earth and planetary sciences.
