Associate Professor Marilyn Bromberg ("M") is the Associate Deputy Head of School (Community and Engagement) at the UWA Law School. She researches Body Image Law, Public Health Law and Social Media Law. In 2014, she graduated with a PhD in Social Media Law. M was a visiting scholar at STRIPED at the TH Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University/Boston's Children's Hospital in 2025 and is currently on their International Expert Advisory Panel. She is also a Principal Fellow at the Frontier Technologies and Society Research Lab and a Founding Member of the National Taskforce for Social Media, Body Image and Eating Disorders. M is the 2024 winner of the UWA Law School Award for Research Impact and Innovation. She also co-edited the Research Handbook on Social Media and the Law with Professor Thaddeus Hoffmeister and wrote the world's only book on Body Image Law: Body Image Law: Revolutionising Images of Thin Ideal Women.
M currently also works as a lawyer at Janssen + Maluga Legal and used to adjudicate hearings for the WA Department of Communities. As well, M acts as a consultant in her research areas for legal organisations and individuals.
Some of the venues where M has spoken include: the Australian Federal Parliament, Harvard University, The Supreme Court of Canada, the Queensland Parliament, the Nova Scotia Legislature, the Family Court of Western Australia, the Melbourne Law School at the University of Melbourne, the Western Australian Parliament and the Australian National University Law School.
The media consistently seek M's expertise, and she has been interviewed on television, radio and other types of media. She has appeared on Sunrise, the Today show, the Project and ABC Radio, among other news outlets.
M currently organises the teaching professional development for academic staff at the UWA Law School and is a member of UWA's Low Risk Ethics Committee. Some of the past positions that she has held at the UWA Law School include: Juris Doctor Director/Director of Professionalism, Director Higher Degrees by Coursework and Director Law and Society Major.
M has been fortunate to be the lead investigator or chief investigator on over one million dollars worth of research grants, including an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant on Body Image Law which commenced in 2025.
Current Units that M Coordinates and Teaches into: (1) Social Media and the Law; (2) Law and Social Change; and (3) Legal Internship.
