Biography

I am a Research Associate at UWA's Ocean Institute and School of Biological Sciences. The focus of my current research is to gain understanding of seagrass response mechanisms to environmental pressures with an emphasis on early stress detection and consequently, loss prevention.

Previously, I studied physiological coral-symbiont interactions in response to climate change.

Current projects

My current research evolves around understanding seagrass health and recovery in Cockburn Sound. I specifically focus on understanding sediment-seagrass dynamics using a multi-disciplinary approach that combines physiology, metabolomics, microbial analysis and in-situ microsensing.

Key Responsibilities included:

  • Communicating and demonstrating scientific content to up to 35 undergraduate students at a time (first to third year)
  • Assisting students with queries about general and marine biology, ecology, biodiversity and climate change
  • Coaching students in scientific communication, results presentation and report writing
  • Organising and overseeing student team projects both in the classroom and field
  • Evaluating and marking scientific student assignments

2013 - 2017: Research Assistant at The Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Bremen, Germany Nov

Key Responsibilities included:

  • Establishing and optimizing cultivation conditions for marine symbiotic invertebrates
  • Producing scientific images of marine flatworms
  • Performing various molecular and microbiological analyses, e.g., DNA and RNA extractions
  • Conducting fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) on marine bacteria and subsequent fluorescent imaging
