Biography

Malcolm Traill has been a research and public historian since 1994, when he was appointed as Local Studies Librarian at the Albany Public Library in Western Australia. Prior to that he was an academic librarian and lecturer at Curtin University.

He specialises in Albany and Great Southern regional history but tutors at the Albany campus of UWA in any type of historical undergraduate unit. In his role as Public Programs Officer at the Museum of the Great Southern (2010-2020), he founded the Museum Curatorial series of lectures in 2011 where he was also a regular presenter. Over 400 talks have since been staged in Albany and the region.

He has been a prime mover in the promotion of history in Albany, having been involved in the organisation of several statewide conferences in that city. Most recently he won the annual award for the Individual Contribution in the Western Australian Heritage Awards (2020). He appears regularly on ABC radio and writes for the monthly Southerly Magazine.

Outside of academic work, he is an Elected Member of the Albany City Council, and also runs a produce stall at the highly-regarded Albany Farmers Market.
