Teaching philosophy

For students to learn and excel they need not only clear instruction, but more importantly to feel comfortable and safe. Building an environment in which students feel comfortable can help break down barriers that might otherwise prevent them asking for help, and dramatically improves the quality of formative assessment. Formative assessment is core to informing pedagogy --- and in this way incorporating student voice can improve outcomes.

Biography

After completing his PhD in statistics in 2016 on the analysis of functional/ high-dimensional (imaging mass spectrometry) data in proteomics/ molecular biology Lyron worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Adelaide and then  the University of South Australia in the same area. During this time he also worked at the Maths Learning Centre at the Universty of Adelaide where his passion for mathematics education and supporting students studying mathematics. This passion led him to enrol in a Master of Teaching which he completed in 2019 on the topic of mathematics bridging courses in Australia with a dual focus between curriculum design/ alignment and on the affective factors that prevent students from suceeding in studying mathematics, including maths anxiety. During his teaching studies Lyron also took a job as a statistician working for a private company in the medical device industry developing image recognition AI/ machine learning for automation of microbiology workflows and testing. On completing his studies, Lyron worked as a highschool teacher in rural South Australia for a short time before accepting his current role at the University of Western Australia and moving to Perth in September 2019. Now he works on the analysis of multivariate/ high-dimensional/ functional data with a variety of applications.
