Biography

Dr Laura Skates is a botanist, artist and environmental educator living and working in the beautiful green city of Perth, Western Australia, on Whadjuk Noongar country.

Laura is currently an Associate Lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences, teaching in the Science Communication discipline and co-coordinating the unit SCOM5309 Citizen Science. 

Laura's research explores plant ecology, conservation, and the interactions and connections between people and plants. She completed her PhD on the nutrition and ecology of carnivorous plants in 2021, with Kings Park Science and the University of Bayreuth, Germany. Following this, Laura completed an Australian Postgraduate Research Internship on science communication at botanic gardens with support from the Friends of Kings Park.

Laura recently co-led the Turning Gardeners into Conservationists citizen science project, developed at UWA with Perth NRM. This project involved more than 200 citizen scientists in southwest Western Australia to monitor vertebrate wildlife visiting their gardens, with a research focus on the benefits of wildlife-friendly gardening for both biodiversity and human well-being.

Laura is an active member of the Australian Citizen Science Association and Australian Science Communicators.
