Since the early 1990s Kyu-Suk Shin has been engaged in Korean language education in Western Australia. She is the founding member of the Korean program at UWA and previously at Curtin University of Technology. She has been involved in the National Projects to develop Korean teaching materials and has authored her own Korean textbooks.

Kyu Shin has conducted research in Korean morphology in the context of universal typology, conceptual structure of Korean verbs and contrastive analysis in language processing between Korean and English. She is currently engaged in the Australia-Korea Foundation (AKF) project "A first step towards a better environment for Australia's Korean language education: Korean at secondary schools".

Kyu Shin was awarded her MA and PhD in Applied Linguistics/ Korean Linguistics at Curtin University of Technology.
