Biography

Kevin Taylor is a Yamatji-Noongar man who has been a lecturer in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in many fields across the university for almost a decade. He is currently the University's longest-serving Indigenous teaching academic and head of Indigenous education development. Kevin is passionate about the student experience and developing new ways to teach Aboriginal culture that allows everyone to understand and connect. He has served on the Academic Board, the UWA Teaching and Learning Committee, has been the Director of the Berndt Museum of Anthropology and is well connected with industry partners who he regulalry engages with for cultural enagagements.  

Teaching overview

Kevin has a very broad and in-depth understanding of teaching Indigenous culture and knowledge to a range of audiences. He has lectured in the medical course and other allied health courses such as dentistry, podiatry and in the new health and humanities major. He previously coordinated the Aboriginal Health & Wellbeing Major and the Aboriginal Orientation uprogram course. He has re-developed and coordinated a number of units including: AHEA2201- Aboriginal Health & Wellbeing, AHEA5755- Aboriginal Health, INDG2700- Knowing Country: Dreaming & Darwin, INDG1800/2800/3800- Indigenous Ways of Knowing 1,2 & 3, INDG1000- Indigenous Studies Essentials, AUST0015/AUST0014 - Aboriginal Voices 1 & 2.

Research

Kevin has been researching the cultural perspectives of quality of life for older Indigenous people since 2017 both in the community and in the aged care system. Currently, Kevin is on a PhD pathway which sees him co-designing with the aged care workforce an education package on the cultural perspectives of older Indigenous people and how to provide cultural care.
