Personal profile

Biography

Dr Kevin Looi is a senior respiratory scientist whose research focuses on airway epithelial biology, chronic airway inflammation, and the development of translational therapeutic strategies for respiratory disease. His work aims to understand how environmental exposures and respiratory viruses affect airway epithelial barrier integrity, mucociliary function, and inflammatory responses, with the goal of identifying novel and accessible interventions to improve respiratory health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Dr Looi has led and contributed to several competitively funded research programs examining viral respiratory infections, vaping-related airway injury, and innovative inhaled therapeutics, including the assessment of aerosolised bioactive compounds. His research integrates advanced experimental models, including well-differentiated primary airway epithelial cultures, alongside in vitro and in vivo systems and multi-omics approaches to bridge fundamental mechanistic insights with translational clinical relevance.

In addition to his laboratory research, Dr Looi actively collaborates with health advocacy organisations and policymakers to ensure that scientific findings inform public health initiatives and strategies aimed at preventing respiratory disease and improving community health outcomes.
