Personal profile

Roles and responsibilities

I am the leader of UWA's node of the Centre for the History of Emotions and Director of Medieval and Early Modern Studies at UWA. I am also the editor of Shakespeare Bulletin, the international journal of Shakespeare in performance.

Research interests

My current research interests are the History of Emotions, theatre, and technology, often intersectionally. I have longstanding interests in Shakespeare in performance, theatre practice as a form of scholarly research, and the History of Emotions as an approach to both performance practice and play analysis.

Current projects

My current research project is Actor, Spectator, Detector, which focuses on the intersectional histories of theatre, emotions, and technology. I am completing two monographs curently in draft (Shakespeare and Emotions in Practice and Theatre and Emotions: A New Theatre History), co-writing another (Shakespeare's England, with David Dean), and co-editing a major collection of essays (The Arden Handbook of Shakespeare in Contemporary Performance, with Peter Kirwan).

Teaching overview

I coordinate units focusing on Shakespeare and theatre more broadly. These currently include Shakespeare: Page / Stage / Screen (ENGL3602), Shakespeare's World (ENGL2602) and Making Theatre (ENGL3502).

Funding overview

In Canada I benefitted from national granting council support for my three most recent projects: Shakespeare and Theatrical Space, Shakespeare and Canada, and History, Memory, Performance
