Biography

Kate Fitzgerald is a PhD Candidate and Research Officer in the School of Allied Health at UWA. Kate completed her Bachelor of Science (Hons) majoring in Population and Global Health in 2018. Kate is committed to research that promotes social justice and aims to improve physical and mental health outcomes for vulnerable populations. She is particularly interested in trauma-informed and restorative practice research within the education sector. Kate’s current doctoral research is exploring facilitators and barriers to positive relationship development between teachers and students in Western Australian schools, viewed through a trauma-informed lens.  

Alongside her studies Kate has been part of the Thoughtful Schools research team, led by Professor Karen Martin, since it’s conception. The increasing awareness about the physiological, psychological and behavioural impacts of trauma led Professor Martin and her team to develop the Thoughtful Schools Program. This early intervention program provides schools with a toolkit based on current best-evidence to assist them in becoming trauma-informed. The Program in currently being implemented and evaluated in schools throughout Western Australia.
