After studying at Oxford University (First Class Honours in Italian and French, 1950; MA, 1957), taught Italian studies (literature and language) at the University of California at Berkeley (1957-1961), University of Reading (1961-1977), The University of Western Australia (1978-1997). Emeritus Professor and Honorary Senior Research Fellow, The University of Western Australia, 1998 to the present.
