Personal profile


I am a poet, literary theorist and ethnographer. My current appointments are Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Arts at the University of New England and Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of English and Cultural Studies at the University of Western Australia. In 2017, I became an assessor for the Australian Research Council (ARC). From 2012 to 2015, I was Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Communications and Arts at Edith Cowan University. I served as Assistant Editor of the journal Landscapes (2009–16) and Communications Officer of the Association for the Study of Literature, Environment and Culture, Australia and New Zealand (ASLEC-ANZ) (2012–15). My areas of expertise include environmental narrative, creative nonfiction, methodologies and theories of poetry, performance poetry, collaborative writing and all aspects of publishing. In particular, I have contributed recently to the fields of Australian ecocriticism, critical plant studies, ecopoetics and Southeast Asian ecocriticism.

I am the author or editor of numerous research books, including Digital Arts: An Introduction to New Media (as co-author, 2014), The Language of Plants: Science, Philosophy, Literature (as co-editor, 2017) and Plants in Contemporary Poetry (as author, 2017). My other works comprise 18 book chapters, 64 refereed journal articles, 11 refereed conference papers, and 42 conference presentations. I have published in the journals ACCESS: Educational Theory and Philosophy, Australian Humanities Review, Continuum, Environmental Humanities, Environmental Philosophy, Global Media Journal, Oral History Australia Journal and Media International Australia; and with the international presses Bloomsbury, Brill, McGill-Queen’s University, Routledge, Rowman & Littlefield (Lexington Books imprint) and the University of Minnesota.

I have published creative work with Fremantle Press and Margaret River Press and in the journals Arc Poetry Magazine, Australian Geographic, Axon, Cordite Poetry Review, Griffith Review and PAN. My work has been reviewed in Australian Poetry, Sydney Morning Herald and Weekend Australian.
