Biography

Dr Jennifer Shand is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia in the Graduate School of Education. During this time, she has coordinated the Master of Teaching (Secondary) and the Graduate Diploma in Education. Her substantive role is senior lecturer in English curriculum and has interests in secondary literacy and literature education. Dr Shand has developed units in secondary initial teacher education on Contemporary Pedagogies and Practices and General Capabilities Across the Curriculum.

Dr Shand’s industry and curriculum discipline expertise lies in English and Literature curriculum teaching. Having taught English between years 7 to 12 and Literature between years 11 and 12, she has been a strong WACE performer, school based English and Literature year level coordinator,  n a Head of Learning Area and Assistant Director. She also has extensive experience in the vocational education and training sector and led a professional development team in TAFE NSW.

Dr Shand supervises Higher Degree Research students in secondary English,  learning environments, writing and grammar pedagogy and instruction, pastoral care and Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Recent graduates have received an Honourable mention for the UWA Graduate Research School Dean’s List and Fogarty Student Research Prize.

She has been active in year 12 WACE examinations and was the Chief Examiner for Literature between 2015 and 2019 and the Chief Marker for Literature between 2012 and 2015. Between 2010 and 2022, Jennifer was a member of the Literature Course Advisory Committee with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (WA). Jennifer provides professional development activities on World Literature and the Literary Close Reading and has given a number of conference presentations on these topics.

An interest in Collaborative Online International Learning has resulted in collaborative projects on World Literature and Cultural Pedagogies with Universitas Negeri Jakarta and Durban University of Technology.
