Personal profile


Hi there! I am an ecologist with a strong interest in freshwater systems, microbial community dynamics, and biogeochemical cycling. My career objective is to use hypothesis driven and multidisciplinary research to improve monitoring, management and protection of the natural environment. 

My areas of research include:

  • Biogeochemical processes in freshwater and riparian ecosystems. 
  • Microbial ecology of natural systems including; freshwater biofilms, soils, plant-microbe interactions.
  • Elucidating links between microorganisms and ecosystem function using novel experimental and in situ methods.  
  • Urban stream ecology and restoration.


I completed a Bachelor of Science and honours degree in Zoology at UWA in 2015. At the beginning of 2021 I completed my PhD in urban freshwater ecosystems, also at UWA. I am now a post-doctoral researcher within the School of Agriculture and Environment working primarily in microbial ecology. I am also co-founder of a science illustration and consulting company, Ooid Scientific, and currently spend my time between illustration and research.

  • Using black soldier fly technology to convert waste into bioenergy, fertilisers, soil improvers and alternative feeds
  • Understanding freshwater DOM dynamics across urban-natural catchments
  • Testing if of exotic riparian vegetation changes freshwater microbial community dynamics and ecosystem processes
