Biography

Jared Clements is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Director of the Centre for Mining, Energy and Natural Resources Law at the University of Western Australia. His teaching and research focus on federal and state taxes, and their intersection with the mining and petroleum industries.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from Murdoch University, and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the College of Law. His doctoral research at UWA examined legal certainty in relation to duties on mining transactions in Western Australia.

Before joining UWA, Jared worked as a lawyer at Allens, Ashurst, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, advising on mining transactions, joint ventures, asset acquisitions and corporate restructures. Jared is admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Western Australia and the High Court of Australia.

Research

Jared’s research focuses on the intersection of taxation and mining and petroleum law. His research has been published in leading journals, including the Australian Tax Review, Taxation in Australia, The Tax Specialist, Company and Securities Law Journal, and the Journal of the Australasian Tax Teachers Association.

Teaching overview

Jared teaches in the Juris Doctor, Master of Laws, and Master of Taxation Law programs at UWA. He has taught and coordinated a range of units, including Taxation Law, Income Taxation Law, Mining and Energy Law, and Resource Taxation.

He has contributed to curriculum design across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, introducing a flipped classroom model in Taxation Law and embedding Universal Design for Learning principles to enhance accessibility and engagement. This work was recognised with a UWA Law School Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning in 2023.

Jared is also a co-author of Principles of Taxation Law (Thomson Reuters, 2023–2026), a leading text used in law and business programs across Australia.

Engagement

Jared serves as a State Councillor of the Tax Institute of Australia. He has previously chaired the State Tax Liaison Committee of the Energy and Resources Law Association and served as Treasurer and Board Member of the Street Law Centre WA Inc.

Within UWA, Jared has held roles as acting Course Coordinator of the Master of Taxation Law, Coordinator of Executive Education, and Associate Director of the Centre for Mining, Energy and Natural Resources Law. He has also contributed to initiatives supporting student scholarships and diversity, including serving as the Law School’s first LGBTIQA+ Advisor.
