Personal profile

Biography

I am a geotechnical engineer and an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering at the University of Western Australia. I focus on the development and use of technology to automate data interpretation, optimize engineering design and enhance design workflow.

I am an author of more than 60 international scientific papers, but increasingly I pursue more rapid forms of dissemination that have more value than publications alone. I founded the open access portal (www.geocalcs.com ) to deliver powerful engineering design tools based on my research, as well as the research of others. The geocalcs platform has over 1000 registered users in more than 60 countries and typically handles 1000s of simulations on a monthly basis.

I have built enterprise cloud based engineering design platforms for multinational company Fugro, as well as small start-up businesses, such as Bubbledeck and Sludgeanalytics. These platforms have sped up calculation tasks by orders of magnitude, in some case reducing calculation run times from more than 12 hours to less than 5 seconds.

I have worked as a consultant and researcher across a range of industries including major civil infrastructure, deep hard rock mining, and offshore oil and gas.

I have a unique skill set, with world leading expertise in geotechnics and cloud computing technologies and a strong vision of how to combine these skills to deliver impact and value for UWA, our industry partners and the wider community.
