Iris completed her studies in Education, Sign Language, and Business at the University of Hamburg in Germany before migrating to Western Australia. She furthered her education by obtaining a PhD in German Studies and Language Learning at the University of Western Australia (UWA), with a focus on the use of online role-plays as a method for language acquisition.
In addition to teaching German at UWA for over two decades, she has instructed German at all proficiency levels and in various educational settings throughout Western Australia. She is an accredited examiner for the Goethe-Institut and oversees the Institut's language examinations in Western Australia.
Iris strongly supports the significance of foreign language learning as a foundation for multicultural exchange and mutual understanding. She feels passionate about facilitating student learning and well-being. In 2024 Iris was awarded the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.
Her research focuses on language education, innovations in this field, and the history of German-speaking migrants to WA. She is a key stakeholder in the German-speaking community, connected with various language and cultural clubs, businesses, and teacher associations. In her volunteer work, she has held multiple committee positions and chaired the Goethe Society WA for many years.
