Born 1958 in Bunbury WA, primary school and high school and 2 gap years in Albany, architecure school UWA 1980-1984 graduated BArch (Hons), started teaching and work with architect Rob Campbell specialist in conservation, and completed PhD Thesis UWA 1990. Registered as an Architect after completing practice exam in 1992, member of AIA, ICOMOS, SPAB, APTI, and Australian Garden History Society, SAHANZ, National Trust WA, & Heritage Skills Association WA. Teaching conservation units at UWA school of architecture 1987-2018, Honorary Research Fellow UWA to 2018, adjunct senior lecturer 2019- .

Research interests

The history of architectural design and construction in Western Australia, and the philosophy of conservation world wide

Current projects

Up to 2020: Research and publishing a series of books on the history of Western Australian building construction titled: Western Building ConstructionRoofs (2014); Walls (2016) and Floors & Ceilings (2020).

Current projects include a survey of lime used in conservation projects in WA since 1990, a catalogue of paint colours recorded on historic buildings as a data base for developing a WA specific traditional colour pallette, and detailed research on the history of coloured finishes for stucco and cement render in WA. 

Also ongoing monitoring of townscape aspects of new developments in Fremantle, and developing a townscape guide starting with the paper An Architectural Language for Townscape in Fremantle, produced in 2016, for lectures in the Unit ARCT 5577 Conservation in Cultural Landscapes, Historic Towns & Urban Precincts.
