Biography

Associate Professor Goulios is the Clinical Director of the Audiology program in the School of Human Sciences. She graduated with first class honours in Physiology from the University of Western Australia (1982) before completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Audiology from Melbourne University (1983). Her career has included senior clinical and management positions with Hearing Australia in Perth, the National Acoustic Laboratories in Sydney, and with the Royal National Institute for the Deaf in London. Her involvement with the UWA Audiology Program began with the inception of the course in 2000 during which time she completed her PhD. Her areas of expertise include audiological assessment, adult and paediatric aural rehabilitation, hearing devices and management of audiological programs in special communities and in the workplace.

Throughout her career, Helen has been dedicated to supporting deaf and hard of hearing people and their families and always enjoyed the experiences of working in clinical practice. In addition, she has worked to promote audiology education and service delivery in low-mid income countries, and has provided voluntary services to projects in Asia and Africa. 

Roles and responsibilities

Helen’s role of Clinical Director of Audiology includes coordinating and/or lecturing in 10 of the 16 Master of Clinical Audiology units in areas including adult and paediatric audiological assessment, aural rehabilitation, hearing devices, audiology practice management, and community and workplace audiology.

Helen is a past Board Member and National Vice-President of Audiology Australia. She currently serves on the Boards of HearingAID East Java and the Earbus Foundation of Western Australia. In recognition of her career-long contributions, Helen was awarded Life Membership of Audiology Australia in 2023.

Research

Helen's research interests are primarily focused on the professional education of audiologists and the enhancement of audiology service delivery, particularly in underserved regions. She recently chaired the Australian National Working Group for Rural and Regional Hearing Healthcare examining workforce availability and growth supported by the Commonwealth Health Department, and has contributed to global initiatives through collaborations with the World Health Organization in providing background information for The World Hearing Report.
