Biography

Giles Knight is a PhD candidate in the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment, having previously completed a double major in Environmental and Geographical Sciences at The University of Western Australia. With a strong passion for spatial sciences and a deep appreciation for the natural environment, Giles works at the intersection of hydrodynamic modelling and applied water resource research.

As part of the WaterSmart Dams team at UWA, Giles is the developer of GLM-py, a Python interface for the General Lake Model (GLM) created by the Aquatic EcoDynamics Research Group at UWA. GLM is a widely used, scientifically validated, one-dimensional hydrodynamic model that simulates water balance and thermal stratification in natural and constructed systems, including farm dams.

By integrating GLM-py into the Water Evaluation Platform (WEP), Giles has helped extend the platform’s functionality by:
• Translating user-friendly web inputs into technical instructions for GLM
• Streamlining workflows for researchers and students to prepare inputs, run simulations, and visualise results within Python
GLM-py is open-source and freely available via the Aquatic EcoDynamics GitHub repository.
