Research

Natural Products and Chemical Ecology

The primary research interest in the Flematti Lab is the isolation and identification of bioactive natural products. The specific activity of these compounds ranges from antibacterial and anticancer activity, through to organism defence and chemical communication. As well as traditional natural product extraction and isolation, we make use of sophisticated analytical instruments including HPLC, GC-MS, HPLC-MS and more recently GC-EAD/MS, to aid in the detection and isolation of bioactive compounds, which are characterised using NMR spectroscopy and high resolution MS techniques. Depending on the structure and function, interesting compounds are confirmed through chemical synthesis.
