Biography

I am a biochemist with expertise in plant metabolism and molecular biology. Originally from Germany, I obtained my PhD in Biology at the Institute of Plant Biochemistry at the Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf under the supervision of Andreas Weber. During my PhD, I became interested in identifying organellar transport proteins in plants and analysing their roles in primary metabolism. After completing my PhD in 2020, I joined Andreas Weber’s project in the Collaborative Research Centre 1208 as a research fellow, where I investigated metabolic interactions between plastids, the cytoplasm and surrounding organelles via metabolite transport proteins and contact sites. In October 2023, I moved to Australia to join Harvey Millar’s group at the University of Western Australia, where I am contributing to ongoing work on protein turnover and research on organellar transport proteins in plants.

Research interests

My research focuses on understanding plant metabolism, with a particular interest in organellar transport proteins. These proteins connect organellar and cellular metabolism, making them key regulators of plant growth and adaptation. Much of my work has centred on amino acid metabolism, including the identification of the first plastid transporter for two of the essential amino acids. At the University of Western Australia, I am now investigating mitochondrial transport proteins and their roles in coordinating amino acid metabolic pathways across organelles. This work provides new insights into how plants regulate metabolic balance, with potential applications in improving plant growth, stress resilience, and nutritional value.
