Research

My research furthers our understanding of RNA editing in plant chloroplast and mitochondria. I use genomics and trancsriptomics techniques to study non-model organisms such as ferns and lycophytes to investigate the evolution of plant RNA editing, with particular interest in the unqiue phenomenon of uridine to cytidine conversion.

I also use molecular biology techniques to engineer new to nature RNA binding proteins to better understand the mechanisms of RNA editing, and create engineered proteins to improve crops and make targeted modifications to RNA.

Funding overview

I am currently employed on an appointment to an ARC Discovery grant working with Professor Ian Small.

Teaching overview

I have taught in several undergraduate and masters courses over the past six years. I have also helped to supervise several honours and masters students for their research projects and dissertations.

I am an associate fellow of the higher education academy.

Teaching philosophy

I like to work with individual or small groups of students to guide them to identify their own learning style and gaps of knowledge. This directed attention often greatly helps students adjust to greater levels of intersectionality inherent in molecular biology which they encounter as they progress from their undergraduate to postgraduate studies.
