Elaine Sharplin

Dr Elaine Sharplin is Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) for the Faculty of Education and Secondary Initial Teacher Education Program Coordinator at The University of Western Australia. She is a researcher and teacher educator in the fields of Rural and Remote Education, Teacher Education, English Education and Educational Leadership.

She was Convenor of the Third International Symposium for Innovation in Rural Education (February 2013).

Her excellence in teaching has been recognised with two Excellence in Teaching Awards (2009, 2002); Nomination for Excellence in Supervision (2012, 2010)and Outstanding Contribution for Student learning (2012).
She teaches on-shore and within the Transnational Program operating in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.

Her service to the discipline of rural education was acknowledged through the award for Outstanding Professional Service Award Professional Teaching Council of Western Australia (PTCWA) by the Society for the Provision of Education in Rural Australia (SPERA) 2012

Previously, she has worked as a Secondary English Teacher, TAFE Lecturer and Research Consultant.

Her PhD on the topic of the Quality of Worklife of Rural and Remote Teachers in Western Australia, was completed in 2008 while juggling the role of mothering two children.

I am expanding my research into the international arena of teacher education and rural and remote education with collaborations and research projects under construction with Dokuz Eylul University in Turkey, a project in a remote Peruvian community and developing opportunities in Indonesia. My aim is to establish a multi-site research project to connect teacher education and rural and remote issues in a global context.

I have three main and two minor areas of research focus. My major research is in Rural and Remote Education (within Australia and internationally, Teacher Education (including pre-service and early career development and teacher standards) and English Education (curriculum development and pedagogy). In addition, I am involved in research in Educational Leadership and Higher Education Teaching and Learning. Many of these topics intersect and relate more generally to issues associated with equity and diversity, experiences of disadvantage and internationalisation.
