Biography

David Hillman AM, MBBS, FANZCA, FRCP(Edin), FRACP(Hon)

 

Prof David Hillman is a researcher with the West Australian Sleep Disorders Research Institute at the Department of Pulmonary Physiology and Sleep Medicine, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth, Australia (Head of Department 1999-2014) and the Centre for Sleep Science and Department of Surgery at the University of Western Australia (UWA).

 

Former professional leadership roles include: Founding Chair (2000-2014) of the West Australian Sleep Disorders Research Institute; President, Australasian Sleep Association (2007-2009); Founding Chair (2009-2016) of the Sleep Health Foundation; and Founding President, Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine (2011-2013).

 

Qualifications: MBBS (UWA 1974); FANZCA (1981); FRCP(Edin) (2004)

 

Awards: Member of the Order of Australia (AM), 2018; FRACP(Hon) 2008; Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Award for Excellence 2006 & 2009; President’s Award, Australasian Sleep Association, 2010; Distinguished Achievement Award, Australasian Sleep Association, 2013; Lifetime Achievement Award, Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine, 2020.

 

Research Interests: Sleep pathophysiology, upper airway and respiratory muscle physiology, sleep and anesthesia, clinical sleep medicine, neuromuscular disorders.

 

Publications: Over 200 peer-reviewed publications/book chapters (50 in last 5 years).

 

Invited Presentations: 120 at national/international meetings.

 

Grants: Over $7,000,000 of competitive grants (chief or co-investigator) in last 10 years.

 

Teaching/Mentoring: Clinical Professor, UWA since 2007.Supervisor/Co-supervisor of training of over 20 sleep physicians, 10 PhD students in last 20 years.

 

Peer Review: Member of the Editorial Board of Sleep (the top ranked international sleep journal) 2003-2018 including Deputy Editor 2013-2015 and Associate Editor 2009-2013 and 2016-2018.  Respiration & Sleep Medicine Section Editor for Anesthesia & Analgesia (the fourth ranked international anaesthesiology journal) 2014-2020. Reviewer for numerous respiratory, sleep and anaesthesia journals and for NHMRC and other national medical research grant bodies.
