Biography

Dr Daniela Ulgiati completed her Bachelor of Science with Honours majoring in pharmacology and physiology and a PhD in immunology and biochemistry at The University of Western Australia. She then won an United States Arthritis Foundation Fellowship for a four year post-doctoral fellowship position at the University of Colorado in Denver. In 2002 she returned to UWA to take up a research and lecturing fellowship and was instated in her current teaching and research position in late 2007.

Research

Dr Ulgiati’s research interest is in the role of complement in health and disease. Her ambition is to clarify the roles of complement and B cell biology in autoimmune disease, using Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) as a model for this and other autoimmune diseases. Currently, the auto-immune diseases that this research is focused on are lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and it is moving towards the study of lymphomas and other cancers. The work performed in Dr Ulgiati’s laboratory is varied and includes a wide range of molecular biological, biochemical, immunological and genetic techniques. Some of which include Genotyping, Chomatin Assays, ChIP assays, DNA sequencing and cloning, cell culture, stable and transient transfection assays, PCR, DNA binding assays, proteomic analysis, and FACS analysis.
