Personal profile

Biography

Originally from the UK, I have a BA in Media and Communications (Goldsmiths), an MA in Migration and Diaspora Studies (SOAS), and a PhD in Sociology (UWA). I am the Academic Coordinator at the McCusker Centre for Citizenship (UWA), educating students about social need, social justice, and civic participation, and coordinating all McCusker Centre academic units (undergraduate and postgraduate) as well as the Minor in Active Citizenship. I have presented at conferences in Australia, Denmark, UK, and Canada and have published in several Q1 academic journals. My PhD was awarded the TASA (The Australian Sociological Association) Jean Martin Award for Best PhD Thesis in Sociology 2021-2023. My paper on immigrant otherness and ethno-nationalism was published in Ethnic and Racial Studies and was awarded the ISA RC05 Best HDR/ECR paper award. I have also contributed to research on the Australian national curriculum and national identity, and I am currently researching the intersections between teamwork, critical consciousness, and social responsibility.  I am a co-convenor of the Sociology out West group, co-convenor for the TASA MEM (Migration, Ethnicity and Multiculturalism) thematic group, and membership secretary for RC05 (Racism, Nationalism, Indigeneity and Ethnicity research committee) for ISA (the International Sociological Association).  My interests centre on the construction of race (both racial Others and whiteness), immigration, critical discourse analysis, national identity and belonging, civic participation and social responsibility.
