Caroline Smith is a PhD student in History, conducting research on Holocaust remembrance in the Italian province of Alessandria. Her thesis examines diverse aspects of commemorative culture in Italy at a local level; these include education and learning, written texts on the Shoah, and engagement with local sites of memory.
Caroline's career background is in journalism, and she drew on this for her undergraduate (Honours) research project, which examined the Sicilian antimafia movement and its relationship with the Italian media. Her freelance writing has included articles for Segmento, Tintean and the Irish Scene magazines; Caroline was previously a member of the editorial committee for Limina: A Journal of Historical and Cultural Studies.
