Biography

Dr Caroline Canham is a research fellow in the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment at UWA, funded by and working with the Australian Government’s National Environmental Science Program Resilient Landscapes Hub (NESP RLH). Her research focus is on investigating the water requirements for native plants that live on rivers, wetlands and shallow aquifers, and working with decision-makers to guide regulation to protect them.

Dr Canham completed her Honours (1st Class) and PhD at Edith Cowan University, studying the water requirements of native banksia woodland on the Gnangara mound in Perth. She joined UWA in 2017, with previous experience in the WA Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (Water Allocation Branch) and post-doctoral research at Edith Cowan University. Since 2017 Caroline’s research has focussed on tropical rivers in northern Australia, particularly the Fitzroy River in the Kimberley region working with the NESP Northern Australia Environmental Research Hub.

Dr Canham’s research is highly collaborative, working with government policy-makers, Aboriginal organisations, land-holders and researchers from a range of disciplines. She has experience in collecting and analysing data from plant ecophysiological studies and vegetation surveys in south-western and northern Australia to address critical knowledge gaps, which are common for many freshwater systems.
