Biography

Professor Farah is Dean and Head of the UWA Dental School, Director of the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia, Professor of Oral Oncology, Director of the Australian Centre for Oral Oncology Research & Education, and a registered Specialist in Oral Medicine & Oral Pathology. He obtained his undergraduate dental degree from the University of Western Australia (1996), and practiced dentistry while completing a PhD in Oral Pathology & Immunology (2000), and his specialist MDSc training in diagnostic Oral Medicine & Oral Pathology (2002) at the University of Queensland (UQ). He gained further experience in oral diagnostic sciences in Oral Medicine at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London with Professor Stephen Porter and Dr Tim Hodgson (2004). The Australian Centre for Oral Oncology Research & Education (ACORE) leverages his academic, clinical and industry partnerships for the advancement of oral oncology translational research, personalized patient care, patient and clinician education and professional development and overall advocacy for patients with head and neck cancer.

Professor Farah has over 20 years’ experience in administration, financial management, strategic planning, budget allocation, change management, supervision and mentoring of staff with formal training in Executive Leadership and Management with a Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership from UQ Business School (2013) majoring in Organisational Change Management, Negotiation, Strategy and Leadership of Teams and People. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (2005) with a particular interest in embedding technology in curriculum.

Industrial relevance

Olympus (Narrow Band Imaging), LED Dental (Velscope), DentalEZ (Identafi), AdDent (Bio/Screen), Henry Schein Halas, Colgate Palmolive, Agilent Technologies (microRNA arrays, exome sequencing), and Life Technologies (SOLiD, Ion Torrent, Ion Proton) and works with these companies to extend R&D and clinical use of new products and technology, while also identifying commercialization opportunities for his work specifically in the area of molecular diagnostics.

Teaching overview

Professor Farah has significant expertise and experience in the delivery of academic content, and has been responsible for curriculum design and implementation in all facets of the dental curriculum. He is currently Professor of Oral Oncology, a Specialist in Oral Medicine and is currently the Head of Postgraduate Training in Oral Medicine at UWA Dental School.

He has experience in teaching head and neck anatomy, oral histology, applied clinical microbiology and immunology, systemic pathology, oral pathology and oral medicine. He has served as course coordinator for many of these subjects, and has also been involved in leading curriculum changes in Indigenous Health, Personal and Professional Development, Comprehensive Oral Care and Integrated Treatment Planning. He was co-convenor of undergraduate and postgraduate oral medicine and oral pathology at UQ, and has supervised postgraduate students in oral medicine in addition to serving as external examiner in oral medicine for several Australian universities.

Professor Farah has worked with the Australian Dental Association to produce educational videos on oral cancer/precancer and intraoral/extraoral head and neck examination for use by general dentists. He is involved in many continuing education courses to a variety of groups nationally including dental hygienists, dental prosthetists and other medical and dental study groups. In collaboration with international colleagues, Professor Farah has worked with Dental Channel (UK) to generate a webinar on use of diagnostic adjuncts for detection of oral cancer/precancer in general practice as part of the November Mouth Cancer Action Month, and works with other organisations interested and involved in Oral Cancer to generate research, commentary and advice on the topic.

Professor Farah has lectured extensively nationally and internationally, and is lead co-author and co-editor of the new authoritative textbook titled "Contemporary Oral Medicine" published by Springer, which is now considered the benchmark of oral medicine texts.
