Dr Ferraz-de-Souza graduated in Medicine from the University of Sao Paulo, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he also undertook clinical training/medical residency in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. Upon obtaining board certification in Brazil, he embarked on a PhD in molecular endocrinology at University College London, UK, studying adrenal gland development and disease under the supervision of Prof John Achermann at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.
Dr Ferraz-de-Souza is interested in scientific communication, serving as Associate Editor for the Journal of the Endocrine Society (JES), and passionate about diversity, equity and inclusion, having served as Chair of the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion at the US-based Endocrine Society (2019-2022) and as inaugural Chair of the Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is a recognised leader at international scientific/professional societies, currently serving at the Board of Directors of the Endocrine Society (2024-27).
Most of his career was built in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where at he was Attending Physician and Tenured Principal Investigator at the Division of Endocrinology Hospital das Clinicas, University of Sao Paulo School of Medicine (2011-2022), supervising and mentoring medical residents and leading a lab investigating the molecular basis of common and rare endocrinopathies, with a focus on metabolic bone disorders such as osteogenesis imperfecta.
From 2022 to 2024, Dr Ferraz-de-Souza was an Associate Professor and Basic & Clinical Sciences Domain Chair at the University of Notre Dame Australia School of Medicine, Fremantle, where he was involved with curriculum design and implementation, mentoring, and student wellbeing. He joined the Global MD program at UWA Medical School as Associate Dean, Student Affairs in September 2024.
