Biography

I am the UWA Director of Graduate Translation Studies and I have been teaching and coordinating several units of the Master of Translation Studies and Graduate Certificate in Translation Studies since their inception in 2014. In 2022 I single-handedly carried out a review of the courses, complete with 4 different surveys to students, alumni, stakeholders and partners. As a result of the review, I added Portuguese and Arabic to the list of languages already offered, which are now 10:  Spanish, Korean, Italian, Japanese, German, French, Bahasa Indonesia and Mandarin Chinese.

I launched the UWA Spanish Major - Beginners in 2017, the UWA Beginner Spanish Minor in 2020 and I am hoping to launch the Intermediate Spanish Minor in 2026. I have designed all of the Spanish units available at UWA, and I teach and coordinate many of them every semester. Currently, these are the only undergraduate courses available to students in Western Australia.

I teach by implementing an innovative research-driven approach and creating networks among UWA and other national and international universities, and between UWA and the wider Western Australian community.

I have been an active memebr of the Flourish in a Second Language - FL2 - activities since 2017 by translating their activities into Spanish, using them in my lessons at UWA, disseminating their benefits among colleagues and publishing extensively on the topic.

I have been at UWA since 2011 and my main areas of interest are Translation Studies and Second Language Teaching.

Current projects

TRANS: I translate many different genres to continuously test my skills, and, more importantly, to offer a more well-rounded experience to my students in the UWA Master of Translation Studies.

Throughout my career I have translated anything from private documents to websites, film to opera, literature to sporting events. I translate and supervise translation projects from/into Eng <> Span <> Ital.

I spend most of my time teaching at UWA, but I am also a practicing translator and a certified NAATI translator in Australia. I invest time and energy in professional development in all fields of my expertise.

I am currently working on:

- a Masterclass on the Translation of Opera, to be offered in 2023/2024 with funding from the Institute of Advanced Studies and the collaboration of world-renown opera singers and producers;

- the translation of a collection of poetry and prose from Italian into Engish;

- the translation and bilingual edition of another children's book in rhyme after publishing the bilingual edition of Sugar-haired Boy/ Il bambino dai capelli di zucchero (Errekappa edizioni) in 2021;

- the curation and supervision of translations for an artist's exhibitions, their website and various events from Italian into Spanish and English.

SPAN: I am currently working on:

- A beginners' grammar book for English-speakers which will also include adapted Flourish in a Second Language exercises - FL2 which I am writing with a colleague from The University of Sydney;

(FL2 is an innovative approach to second language teaching and learning consisting of specifically devised wellbeing resources embedded into L2 courses. It originally was a Flinders University and University of Sydney project that I joined in 2017 initially translating activities into Spanish, then researching, implementing and publishing more research on it and since 2020 leading the project.)

- A new publication on my most recent collaboration with academics from University of Sydney, Flinders University and University of Adelaide which is being published this year. (These publications are the result of years of work on developing and implementing the method called FL2 in my classes and in the classes of my colleagues)

- A Masterclass on Singing in Spanish to be offered in 2023/2024 with the collaboration of Opera singers and producers and funded by the Institute of Advanced Studies.

- A presentation at IATED 2023 on teaching Gen Z generation.

Future research

Being teaching-intensive means that I must prioritise my teaching, feedback and assessment in the Master of Translation Studies and in Spanish Studies. Nonetheless, I have been able to invest my own time in the projects below.

TRNS:

I have been looking into the translation of Opera and I have a draft paper.

The translation of humour is another topic I have started to investigate.

SPAN:

I am finalising work on the publication of a beginners' grammar for students of Spanish and aim to finish in the near future.

I aim to publish a paper on teaching Gen Z Spanish in the near future.
