Biography

Dr Andrew Toner, MA BMBCh FRCA FANZCA MD(Res), is an Academic Anaesthetist at Royal Perth Hospital; Senior Clinical Lecturer, University of Western Australia; Clinician Research Fellow, Raine Foundation/ Department of Health.

He completed undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, his medical qualification at Oxford University, and his anaesthetic training at St. George's School of Anaesthesia, London. Subsequently he obtained his Doctor of Medicine research degree (PhD equivalent) from Cambridge University.

Dr Toner's main research interests are in improving outcomes after high-risk surgery, chronic post-surgical pain, perioperative inflammation/ autonomic function, and apnoeic oxygenation.

Recent grants include: $4.3 million from the MRFF to fund the definitive LOLIPOP Trial, exploring whether perioperative lidocaine infusions reduce chronic post-surgical pain 1 year after breast cancer surgery; $342, 625 from the Raine Medical Research Foundation/ Dept of Health (Clinician Research Fellow); $69,605 from the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists to fund the LOLIPOP Pilot Study.

Dr Toner is an author on over 30 publications, including 3 book chapters, 2 major reviews and 1 editorial.

Awards include:

1. Harry Daly Award for highest ranked ANZCA Project Grant (2018)

2. Ralph Noble Prize for best clinical Doctor of Medicine thesis, Cambridge Univesity (2018)

3. Early Career Clinical Researcher Prize, Royal Perth Hospital (2015)
