Personal profile

Biography

I am the founding Director of the Centre for Engineering Innovation: Agriculture & Ecological Restoration at UWA. My research strengths are primarily in engineering innovation related to (mechanical) agricultural engineering, ecological restoration and engineering education, although my interests are broader.

I completed my PhD (2007) at UWA in dynamics and vibration under the supervision of Dr Dianne Hesterman and Professor Brian Stone. In addition to being Professor Stone's last PhD student, I was also mentored by him to become the first mechanical engineering postgraduate teaching intern through UWA's national award winning Postgraduate Teaching Internship Scheme. Upon submitting my PhD thesis I jointly was awarded a UWA Whitfeld Fellowship and a scholarship from the Italian Embassy in Canberra. At the University of Bologna (UniBo, Italy) from 2007 to 2010 I was jointly appointed in mechanical engineering (design) and agricultural engineering and worked extensively with industry. Recognising the potential and need for agricultural engineering and mechanical engineering innovation in Western Australia (and Australia more broadly) I returned to UWA in 2011 and established a number of cross-disciplinary collaborations.

I was named the West Australian Innovator of the Year 2016 for developing the Seed Flamer technology and, in 2018, I was awarded both a Tall Poppy Award and a 40Under40 Award for forging UWA's agricultural engineering research strength. In 2019 I was appointed UWA's inaugural agricultural engineer through the UWA 'Be Inspired' campaign and later that year won a WA Innovator of the Year Award for developing the Weed Chipper. I won an Australian Awards for University Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in 2020 and in 2021 I co-chaired, with Professor Sally Male, the first joint Research in Engineering Education Network - Australasian Association for Engineering Education Conference.

Roles and responsibilities

As Director of CEI:AgER, UWA's inaugural agricultural engineer, Engineering for Agriculture co-Theme Leader in the UWA Institute of Agriculture, I lead the engineering research and development of a number of research directions within agriculture and ecological restoration:
- alternative weed control technologies for broad-acre cropping to help overcome reliance on herbicides.

- sub terranean clover seed harvesting technology

- developing machinery solutions and processes for the commercial rearing of black soldier flies

- native seed flaming and mechanisation technology that are changing how degraded lands are restored using native seeds.

- a number of projects with leading manufacturers of agricultural machinery

Industrial relevance

In my UWA role I regularly consult with leading industries to offer innovative design insights and to design, build and commission new machinery. This experience is brought to the classroom where I teach mechanical design in our 5th-year Captstone Mechanical Engineering Design units (semesters 1 and 2)

At the University of Bologna, I collaborated with diverse industries in Italy (ranging from the agricultural sector to automotive industry). I was also part of the Technical Working Group established to revise the OECD ROPS tractor codes.

Teaching overview

Since 2016 I have taught the 5th year Capstone Mechanical Engineering Design units within the MPE programme at UWA. Additionally I have taught dynamics and vibration units at UWA and taught mechanical engineering design at the University of Bologna (Italy).

I have won a number of teaching awards at UWA and, in 2020, I received an Australian Awards for University Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning: “For the development of engaging and novel curricula and resources that are grounded in the history and relevant to the future of engineering.”
