Professor Amanda Davies is a social scientist with expertise in demography, population geography and rural and regional development. Her research focuses on examining population growth, distribution and patterns of demographic change, particularly in response to economic, social or climatic challenges.
As an applied researcher, Amanda works closely with industry and government to deliver timely and relevant information to inform policy. She is one of Australia's leading public commentators on population and demographic issues.
Given public interest, Amanda has published some 'quick reads' on Western Australia's population growth, which you can read here and here and Australia's population fertility, which you can read here.
Amanda is currently a principal investigator on 6 major projects, with funding from the Australian Research Council, Volunteering Australia, CRC TiME and Feilman Foundation.
As the Head of UWA's School of Social Sciences, Amanda is the youngest person to be appointed as a full professor of Geography at UWA and the first female to be appointed as the Head of the School of Social Sciences. Amanda is a Fellow of the Institute of Australian Geographers, and holds an Adjunct Professorship at Curtin University's School of Molecular and Life Sciences.
Amanda obtained her Bachelors of Science (Hons) from UWA and Doctor of Philosophy from New England and has also completed further study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Oxford University, Melbourne University and Victoria University of Wellington.
Professor Davies discussed her research as part of UWA's 'Research on the Record' series.
