Biography

Professor Amanda Davies is a social scientist with expertise in demography, population geography and rural and regional development. Her research focuses on examining Australia's population growth, distribution and patterns of demographic change, particularly in response to economic, social or climatic challenges. Her work also focuses on exploring the social, economic and environmental issues related to rural and regional development, particularly in mining and agricultural communities.

As an applied researcher, Amanda works closely with industry and government to deliver timely and relevant information to inform policy. She is one of Australia's leading public commentators on population and demographic issues. 

Amanda is currently a principal investigator on 5 major projects: 2 funded by the Australian Research Council, 2 funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for the Transformation of Mining Economies and 1 funded by Volunteering Australia. 

As the current Head of UWA's School of Social Sciences, Amanda is the youngest person to be appointed as a full professor of Geography at UWA and the first female to be appointed as the Head of the School of Social Sciences. Amanda is a Fellow of the Institute of Australian Geographers, and holds an Adjunct Professorship at Curtin University's School of Molecular and Life Sciences.

Amanda obtained her Bachelors of Science (Hons. A1) from UWA and Doctor of Philosophy from New England and has also completed further study at Oxford University, Melbourne University and Victoria Univeristy of Wellington.
