Biography

I graduated from the University of Western Australia and was awarded the Medicinae Studii Princeps – the Australian Medical Association Gold Medal, in addition to the prizes in both Medicine and Surgery. I am a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians (London) and have worked in the Oxford University Department of Neurology and the Institute of Molecular Medicine Oxford, The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London UK, the Heidelberg Kopfklinic, and in the National Institutes of Health, USA. I have served as Honorary Secretary, Council Member and Coordinator of Advanced Training for the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists and am an Inaugural Member of the Central Scientific Committee, Vice President and Treasurer of the Pan Asian Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis. I am a member of the International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium (IMSGC). I have served as the Chairman of the MSRA Haematological Stem Cell Transplant Committee, and as a member of the MSRA Brain Bank Scientific Advisory Committee. I was the Head of the Department of Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, and I am currently the Director of the Demyelinating Diseases Centre at the Perron Institute, Adjunct Professor of Neuroimmunology at Murdoch University, Clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of Western Australia, and previously Visiting Professor at Sun Yat Sen University, PR China. I am Deputy Director of the Professional Services Review, Chair of Neurology Panel, and Member of the Professional Services Review Panel, an independent Commonwealth Statutory Agency directly responsible to the Minister for Health for maintaining the regulation and integrity of Australia’s MBS and PBS system. I am Chairman of the International Outreach Advisory Committee of the International Skills and Training Institute of Health charity http://www.istih.org. I am Director and Founder of the Eye Wall Foundation Limited, a registered Health Promotion Charity and registered Advancing Health Charity for neurological research which attests to my commitment and responsibility to public service. I have received numerous postgraduate awards and I was a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) CJ Martin Scholar. I established the comprehensive Western Australian clinical database of over 2,400 MS patients with comprehensive long-term follow-up, have been involved in numerous international multicentre MS drug trials for many years, and I have published widely. My work has directly influenced current global medical practice, treatment, and government policy. I have extensive experience in MS epidemiology, clinical trials and neuroimaging, and I have served and continue to serve on numerous national and international scientific advisory boards in a leadership role for government, academic sector, and private industry. I have successfully supervised and mentored multiple physicians and neurologists into their successful professional and academic careers, and I have mentored and supervised multiple successful BSc, MSc, and PhD candidates. My current research encompasses both clinical research and fundamental research into the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis.
