Biography

After working at UWA off and on since 1996 I made the decision to apply for an ARC Laureate Scholarship at ANU. I was successful and am now working on an important project recovering deep human history. My primary question is what sort of evidence do we use to understand the deep human past?

Teaching philosophy

Teaching at the university level has to be different from the high school level. This means that expectations of students need to be made; not in terms of good essays but also in terms of engagement with the unit material, the other participants of the unit and the lecturers and tutors.

I love teaching, developing curriculum, lecturing and tutoring because I love seeing students show how they have learnt; so I begin by asking students what is knowledge? And how can they show me that they are not just regurgitating what they have read or heard, but have critically thought about what they have learned. Then you know that students minds have changed.
