Biography

Prof. Kronzucker is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Western Australia. He is the founder and former Director of the Canadian Centre for World Hunger Research and has, since 2014, served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Plant Physiology (Elsevier). He obtained his Ph.D. in Botany from the University of British Columbia, Canada. He has held a Rockefeller ‘Human Frontier’ Fellowship at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines and has held Professorships at the University of Western Ontario, the University of Toronto, the University of Melbourne, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the University of British Columbia. From 2017-2018, he led the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne and, from 2018-2020, the University of Melbourne's School of Agriculture & Food. He has served on numerous international research grant and science policy bodies, including on Times Higher Education (THE) university rankings panels and as advisor to the Gates Foundation. Prof. Kronzucker’s research program is placed at the intersections of plant physiology, ecology, and agriculture, with an emphasis on plant nutrition, nutrient transport, and ion toxicities. Recent work has focused on nitrogen relations, potassium homeostasis, sodium toxicity, micronutrients, and silicon in the world’s major cereal crops. His work has been published in the premier international venues, including Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Plants, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), and Trends in Plant Science, and has been prolifically featured in the popular media. He has won many prestigious awards, including a Canada Research Chair, a Bayer ‘Science for a Better Life’ award, a lifetime achievement award from Laval University, and a Distinguished Professorship from the University of Toronto. He is a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher.
