Dr. Yingnan Shi began his lectureship at the University of Western Australia (UWA) at Centre for Business Data Analytics (CBDA). Before joining UWA, he was affiliated by CSIRO and the Australian National University (ANU) from 2018. Over the past decade, Dr. Shi has amassed diverse experiences in teaching and industry roles across telecommunications, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), banking, and medical equipment manufacturing. These experiences have endowed him with a strong interdisciplinary foundation, which allows him to explore a wide array of topics and contribute to primarily four academic fields.
1 Integration of Applied Psychology and Computer Science: Yingnan's work merges applied psychology with computer science. For example, he has investigated the most effective ways humans interact with artificial intelligence (AI) agents, focusing on aspects such as timing, communication styles, and other forms of human-AI interaction. This type of work is increasingly recognized for its practical relevance and academic rigor, with several articles published in top-tier journals and conference proceedings, including more technically oriented journals like Information Processing & Management (IPM) and more human-centered journals like Behaviour & Information Technology.
2 Semantic Web Applications, Knowledge Graphs, and QA-Based Knowledge Evaluation: During his PhD, Yingnan participated in his supervisor’s team on cutting-edge topics in the field of information systems, such as Semantic Web applications, knowledge graphs, and QA-based knowledge evaluation. These areas focus on organizing, structuring, and evaluating information, which is crucial for advancing knowledge management systems and improving the accuracy of search and retrieval processes in large datasets, such as those used by enterprises and educational platforms.
3 Management: Yingnan has conducted research in Management, focusing on the intersection of technology implementation and organizational behaviour. He has co-authored with prominent researchers in HRM, working on areas such as AI-based personality tests to promote knowledge sharing in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which was published in Personnel Review. Additionally, he has explored leadership theories with scholars like Giles Hirst, including his co-authored work "Leadership – Moral," featured in A Concise Guide to Key Theories for Human Resource Management Research. These efforts position him as a thought leader in applying technology-driven solutions to HRM challenges.
4 Marketing, information economics, and E-commerce: Yingnan also brings his interdisciplinary skills to marketing and e-commerce, collaborating with economics researchers such as Andrew Reeson and marketing researchers like Toni Eagar. His research explores online platform behaviours, including platforms like edX, Coursera, Reddit, Twitter (X.com), Instagram, and Facebook, applying both qualitative and quantitative methods to understand various phenomena, such as user compliance during COVID-19, anti-work movements, and the dynamics within the black music community in live streaming. This work provides valuable insights into consumer behaviour in digital spaces, which are increasingly crucial for marketers and e-commerce platforms. Additionally, his chapter on "The Possibilities and Pitfalls of Capturing Livestreamed Performances" in The Routledge Handbook of Digital Consumption further consolidates his expertise in this domain.
In 2015, Dr. Shi earned the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) credential from the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). He is also an active member of the Association for Information Systems (AIS), where he contributes to advancing the field through research and professional development.
Dr. Shi has been actively involved in the academic community, not only through his research but also as a dedicated mentor and educator. He has supervised postgraduate students and consistently received positive student feedback. His commitment to education extends to his role as a lead lecturer and course convenor in Canberra, where he designed and delivered a wide range of courses, including but not limited to digital transformation, business analytics, and technology management.
In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, Dr. Shi was an affiliated researcher with the Australian Centre on China in the World at ANU. His involvement in this research centre highlights his interest in the global implications of his work.
Outside of academia, Dr. Shi enjoys playing board games, which he finds to be an excellent way to unwind and engage in strategic thinking. His enthusiasm for board games reflects his passion for complex problem-solving and collaboration, traits that also influence his research and teaching.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
