Personal profile

Research

My research centres on the structural effects of language contact. I have been working with speakers of Mudburra (Pama-Nyungan; Ngumpin) since 2016.

Research interests

language contact, change, maintenance, revitalisation, and documentation

Previous positions

I have previously taught in the Linguistics departments at the University of Queensland and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.

I worked as a community linguist at Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre in Port Hedland, Western Australia from 2011-2014.

I worked on the Oral Proficiency Assessment Team at the Centre for Applied Linguistics in Washington, DC in 2011.

I served as a research assistant on the Alor and Pantar Languages Project in eastern Indonesia in 2010.

Community engagement

Community engagement is at the heart of my work. I have worked alongside members of multiple language communities--most recently, the Mudburra community--to produce useful language resources requested by community members. I have helped make picture books, posters, charts, videos, and classroom resources. Perhaps most significantly, I also helped create and publish the 2019 Mudburra to English Dictionary--the culmination of nearly five decades of work by many dozens of dedicated people.
