Personal profile

Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment. My research interests focus on geographical elements of environmental systems, and how spatial and temporal models can examine environmental change and drivers of change. Particularly this has involved investigating coastal and marine changes in habitat through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing data.

Recent research projects have been focussed on assessing remote sensing technolgies and spatial analytics for monitoring and detecting change in marine habitat, including mangroves, seagrass, and coral reefs. I have a particular interest in developing and testing emerging remote sensing and GIS methods for marine and environmental monitroing, and assessing blue carbon. Over my research career my research expereince has expanded to include in population health.

Teaching overview

I am the Unit Coordinator for ENVT 4408 Programming in GIS, and ENVT 4408 Remote Sensing of the Environment Postgradaute units, and co-Unit Coordinator for ENVT3306 Marine and Coastal Management.

I teach into GEOG1106: Climate Change: Environment and Society

and have taught into SCIE5005, SCIE5504, and developed the microcredential ENVTM505 GIS and Remote Sensing in a Changing World

Funding overview

I have established relationships with Government, indsutry and research organisations. I have successfully attracted over $4 million in research projects I have led, or been an chief investigator. Selected listed below:

  • WAMSI Mardie Offset Funding: Mapping Pilbara Coast Salt Flats and Algal Mats
  • Exmouth Gulf Salt Flats: Ecological Values and Threats, Minderoo Foundation
  • Integrated Coastal Analyses and Sensing Technology Project (ICoAST): Remote Sensing: Benthic and Coastal Habitat Mapping, Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre Collaborative Funding Grant
  • The Federal Government Clean Energy Regulator - Blue Carbon Method Science Advisory Team
  • Spatial Monitoring Capacity Building Workshop - Australian Institute of Marine Science Capability Development Fund - workshop to develop best practices for use of field, RPAs, and satellite data in ecological marine and coastal research. Included delegates from AIMS, The University of Western Australia, The University of Queensland and James Cook University, State Government (DBCA)
  • Climate driven shifts in benthic habitat composition as a potential demographic bottleneck for western rock lobster: understanding the role of recruitment habitats to better predict the under-size lobster population for fishery sustainability - Fisheries Research & Development Corporation
