Biography

Simon Driver is an astronomer studying the evolution of mass, energy and structure, from the Big Bang to the present day. He attained his PhD from the then University of Wales College of Cardiff in Astrophysics in 1994, and held Research Associate/Fellow positions at Arizona State University, the University of New South Wales, and the Australian National University. He then spent 8 years at the University of St Andrews as Lecturer, Reader, Professor and Observatory Director. In 2011 he relocated to UWA as Winthrop Research Professor within the then School of Physics, and now heads the Distant Universe Science Unit within the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR). His research combines (federates) data from space-based imaging (using ESA and NASA space telescopes), and ground-based imaging and spectroscopics facilities in Australia and Chile. He uses these data to build up an empirical blueprint of the evolution of mass, energy and structure from the era of the Big Bang 13.7billion years ago to the present data. As part of this process he leads large international teams of astronomers through the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) and Wide Area VISTA Extragalactic Surveys (WAVES). In coming years he will be incporating data from a number of notable missions on which he has guaranteed time including eROSITA, Euclid and JWST. He recently served as a member of the Australian Research Council's College of Experts, and as Deputy Chair of the Anglo-Australian Telescope Council, an executive member of the 4MOST Consortium, Chair of the Australian Astronomy Limites Space  Science Leads Committee and the UWA Astronomy from Space node of the recently established International Space Centre.
