Research interests

My research interests are in the broad field of materials sceince and engineering, with specific attention in physical metallurgy, metallic composites, shape memory alloys, magnetic materials, thin films for MEMS technology, elastic strain engineering, nanomaterials and functional materials. 

A few of my curernt research topics are exciting. One is to create unprecedented ultra-large elastic strains close to the theoretical limits in metallic materials by a novel concept of "lattice strain maching". It has the promise to bridge the gap between the nanoworld of possiblity and the macroworld of reality. Related to this is "elastic strain engineering", by which we use the ultra-large elastic strains (typically 10~20 times of the largest found in engineering materials) to change the physical and chemical functiopnal properties of solids and thin films. This opens a new door to a vast opportunity to create unprecedented functional materials. 

My recent work has been publihsed in Science, Advanced Materials, Materials Today, Nano Letters, etc.

Biography

Professor Yinong Liu completed his B.Eng. degree study at Beijing University of Science and Technology in 1982 and then received his PhD degree from the University of Western Australia in 1991. After that he completed a postdoctoral research at the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble in France in 1993 as a France-Australia Postdoctoral Fellow. He then returned to the University of Western Australia to start his academic career in 1994. He is currently appointed Professor of Materials Engineering of the University. Through the years he has served as Head of the School of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics. He is currently the Associate Dean (International) of the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.

Professor Liu has also been appointed adjunct and honorary professors and professorial fellows in a number of foreign universities, including University of Tsukuba, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science senior invitation fellow, Université Joséph Fourier, Université de Grenoble, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Harbin Engineering University, China University of Petroleum, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Liu has also played active leadership roles in the academic and professional communities, including the Chair of the National Committee on Nanoengineering of the Institute of Engineers Australia, member of the Standards Australia Committee, member of the College of Experts of Australian Research Council, Associate Editor of the journal of Shape Memory and Superelasticity, Associate Editor of the journal of Functional Materials Letters, and member of the Editorial Boards of three other international scholarly journals. He also serves on the international advisory committees of six international conferences on functional materials and nanotechnology.

His current research activities include shape memory alloys, metallic composites, superalloys, nanomaterials, magnetic materials, thin films for MMES technology, and elastic strain engineering. He has supervised over 30 PhD students to completion, published over 300 research articles, including 260 in SCI listed international journals in the disciplines of materials science and engineering, physical metallurgy, physics and magnetism, nanotechnology and nanomaterials, and materials chemistry. His research has attracted over 8000 citations with an H-index of 44.
