Biography

Professor Stephen Houghton is a registered psychologist and Director of the Centre for Child & Adolescent Related Disorders at the University of Western Australia. He is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde, School of Psychological and Health Sciences, Glasgow, Scotland. Professor Houghton’s expertise is in child and adolescent developmental psychopathology, loneliness and the associated behavioural, social, educational, and health outcomes. He has an h-Index of 40, i10-index of 105, and a Research Gate score of 37.17. In total, Professor Houghton’s work has been cited over 6,000 times. His recent research examining the longitudinal causal associations between electronic screen use and mental health in young people was publicized in 60 countries, including via CNN news.  He currently leads a 4 year ARC longitudinal study of loneliness in adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders, and a 3 year Healthway project developing a 3-D animated gamified cognitive bias modification treatment program for adolescent mental health. Professor Houghton has received 7 ARC Discovery grants, 13 Healthway (the Western Australian Health Promotion Foundation) grants, one Australian Rotary Health Research grant and one National Health & Medical Research Council grant.
